The mcshield service is used by Mcafee's antivirus applications. The function of this service is to provide realtime monitoring of all file accesses as well as to display a task tray icon that can be used to perform additional tasks and allow configuration of the service. Under normal circumstances this service will halt explorer or external applications from executing, reading or writing to the file until it gives the system permission to, after the point at which it checked the file for all known viruses. If a file is found to be infected with a virus it will then follow the rules it was given, normally which is to disinfect or quarantine the file. If you wish to remove this service then you should uninstall it. If you choose to disable this service it will not scan in realtime for viruses.
