Services Utility: RIP Listener Service

Display Name (?): RIP Listener
Short Name (?): iprip
Executable (?): svchost.exe
Library (?): iprip.dll
Depends On (?): Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Supports (?): None.
Description (?): Listens for route updates sent by routers that use the Routing Information Protocol version 1 (RIPv1).
OS (?): 2000 Professional, XP Home/Professional, Vista Home/Business, 2000 Server, Server 2003, Vista Server
Startup (?):

Explanation (?):

The RIP listener service allows a Windows computer to monitor the network for Ripv1 routing updates. This lets your network run a bit more smoothly without you having to manually update static routes. Since it's only Ripv1 it doesn't help in a highly segmented network, because Ripv1 doesn't broadcast the subnet mask information. This service should only be used on a corporate network, and even then it's usefulness is limited. I suggest that you uninstall this feature unless you need it.
