Services Utility: RIP Listener Service Display Name (?): | RIP Listener | Short Name (?): | iprip | Executable (?): | svchost.exe | Library (?): | iprip.dll | Depends On (?): | Remote Procedure Call (RPC) | Supports (?): | None. | Description (?): | Listens for route updates sent by routers that use the Routing Information Protocol version 1 (RIPv1). | OS (?): | 2000 Professional, XP Home/Professional, Vista Home/Business, 2000 Server, Server 2003, Vista Server | Startup (?): | Default | Home | Workstation | Server | Minimal | Tweaked | Automatic | Automatic | Disabled | Automatic | Automatic | Disabled | Disabled | Disabled | | Explanation (?): | The RIP listener service allows a Windows computer to monitor the network for Ripv1 routing updates. This lets your network run a bit more smoothly without you having to manually update static routes. Since it's only Ripv1 it doesn't help in a highly segmented network, because Ripv1 doesn't broadcast the subnet mask information. This service should only be used on a corporate network, and even then it's usefulness is limited. I suggest that you uninstall this feature unless you need it. |
