Explanation (?):

The simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) service provides SMTP capabilities to Windows. This is used for queuing and sending email across a network, including the Internet. The SMTP service is also used by Windows for replicating email information across domain controllers. This service is also used by Exchange servers. If you are running a mail server then you should leave this set to automatic. If you do not use this ability then you should uninstall email features from add / remove programs on the control panel.
