Explanation (?): | The echo protocol runs on port 7 (RFC 862) and returns all data sent to it back to the original source. The discard protocol runs on port 9 (RFC 863) and ignores all data sent to it, so it's like echo without the echoing abilities. The character generator runs on port 19 (RFC 862) that sounds out a fix character stream when connected. The daytime protocol runs on port 13 (RFC 867) and returns the date and time of the server when a user connects. The quote of the day runs on port 17 (RFC 865) and returns a editable text string to the connecting user. These services are all run through the same service, so when this service is enabled then all 5 of these protocols are enabled. These are for testing purposes only and they shouldn't be left enabled on any server. Various settings of this service can be altered in the registry settings of the service under the parameters keyword, but this should only be done if you know what you're doing. This service should be left on automatic only when being used, or they should be disabled or removed. |
